Constitutional Protection Zone

On December 31st, 2011, President Obama signed the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Sections 1021 and 1022 authorize the indefinite military detention on U.S. soil of anyone, including American citizens, without charge or trial.

As a nonprofit law and policy center dedicated to protecting Constitutional rights, we find this measure unacceptable.

We are working here in Santa Cruz to pass an ordinance making Santa Cruz City and County a Constitution Protection Zone (CPZ). The ordinance would instruct our local government officials, including law enforcement, to honor their oath to protect the Constitution “against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

If we succeed, local law enforcement will be required to actively protect the constitutional rights of every Santa Cruz City and County resident by notifying the City Council or County Supervisors when would-be violators of the Bill of Rights plan to illegally detain a Santa Cruz resident.
